Welcome to Fes
Nothing in Morocco is as splendid as Fes!
When people refer to "the colours and smells of Morocco", it must be Fes they mean, because here you find them in abundance.
Huge and bubbly, seemingly lost in the middle of nowhere, with Morocco's biggest souks, but always providing you with views and air and space, Fes sometimes seems more authentic and more "Arabia" then any other Moroccan city.
With Marrakech having become Morocco's tourist resort number 1, it is up to Fes now to wear the crown of the city that has remained closest to its imperial roots.
Fes boasts not less than 12.000 Riads. Its entire Medina has been declared patrimonium of humanity by Unesco.
Our recommendation is to spend a minimum of 3 nights.
Going about in Fes
The ideal map of the Medina of Fes has not been designed yet.
Even 'Fessi' or people from Fes sometimes get lost in the vast network of alleys and small streets of the medina.
It is 'par excellence' a city to just wander about. You are never further than a 10 minute walk from a square or street where you can take a taxi.
The 'petit taxi', or the small blue taxi can take you anywhere in the city at rates that, compared to those of Europe, are very cheap. For short distances the rate can sometimes be as low as 1€.
Make sure your taxi driver puts on the meter. Taxi drivers are required to do so.
If you arrive at the train station, you are in the new part of town, but still only a 5 minute drive from the Medina.
Going to Fes by train
Fes is easily accessible by train, whether you come from or go to Marrakech or Tangier.
One train line goes to Meknes, Asilah and Tangier.
The other train line goes to Meknes, and then turns towards Rabat, Casablanca and Marrakech.
Train Schedule
You can verify the train times in the website of the national railroads : www.oncf.ma
In the Neighourhood
At only half an hour by train, Meknes is the city closest to Fes.
What makes Fes so special, its authenticity, applies perhaps even more to smaller and calmer Meknes: 100% Arabia.
The white and calm beach town of Asilah is at an approximate 3 hour train drive and is nice for a calm afternoon at the sea, or perhaps a beach holiday. Half an hour further you will find the colourful mixture of cultures and continents... Tangier.
We wish you a very pleasant stay.
